Objective To investigate the effects of advanced glycosylation end products(AGEs) on the expression of connective tissue growth factor(CTGF) and fibronectin(FN) in cultured human mesangial cells. Methods Human mesangial cells were cultured in DMEM medium and were incubated with AGEs modified bovine serum albumin(AGE-BSA).The mRNA of CTGF and FN were measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results The expression of CTGF mRNA and FN mRNA significantly enhanced by incubation of AGEs in a time-and dose-related manner(P<0.05).Conclusion The expression of CTGF and FN in human mesangial cells is upregulated by AGEs,which may have potential effects in the pathgenic mechanism of diabetic nephropathy.
